| UK budget deficit at the end of June soared to 38.3% of GDP. The debt does not include loans to the BoE and Northern Rock. The sharp rise in debt is fueled by rising public expenses and rapidly slowing economic expansion. The government hopes to keep debt below 40% of the GDP and lower than 43 billion pounds, which increasingly looks difficult to achieve. |

| The unemployment rate was 5.2% for the three months to May 2008, unchanged over the previous quarter but down 0.2 over the year. The number of unemployed people increased by 12,000 over the quarter but fell by 47,000 over the year, to reach 1.62 million. |

| In the three months to May, the seasonally adjusted chained volume index for the output of the production industries fell by 0.5% compared with the previous three months. Between April and May output of the manufacturing industries fell by 0.5%. |
